Standing on the edge of Erangel, I had no idea that a single bullet would completely change how I understood PUBG's gunfights. I clicked into the latest Gunplay Labs session expecting the same old spray patterns and the same predictable camera flinch. What I got instead felt like a whole new battlefield. I'm talking about the new Aim Punch system, and after several matches, I can tell you this is not just a small tweak—it's a fundamental shift in how every weapon category feels.

Before diving in, I brushed up on the Dev Letter that outlined the testing schedule. The PC and console sessions ran across specific windows, with a feedback survey available at SurveyMonkey. The first thing I noticed was the clear split between two mechanical layers: Aim Shift and Camera Shake. Aim Shift is the upward displacement of your actual aiming point when you get hit. That displaced point does not automatically return, which means you have to actively correct your crosshair. Camera Shake, on the other hand, moves your view without changing the true aim point. It affects axis rotation, vertical and horizontal movement, and even the shake value of the field of view. Together, these two systems create a hit response that feels more alive than the old minimized version on the live server.

I remember the old Early Access days. Aim Punch back then was powerful, but visually unnatural. It often hindered gameplay more than it helped. The live server version we've been playing for years is much softer—it avoids disrupting fights, but it also fails to create meaningful distinctions between weapon categories. This new Gunplay Labs version is trying to combine the best of both worlds: the impact of Early Access with the refined control of the live build.

My first test came with a bolt-action sniper rifle. The Dev Letter placed all SRs at the highest Aim Punch intensity. I understood why immediately after taking a body shot from an AWM. My screen lurched upward so violently that my follow-up shot went into the sky. The aiming point shifted significantly, and I had to fight to bring my scope back down. For a slow-firing weapon, this feels fair. You only need to land one shot, but if the target survives, they are genuinely rattled.

Shotguns were another shock. A close-range blast with multiple pellets delivered an Aim Shift intensity that felt heavier than most other weapons. Increased damage meant a harsher visual impact. I tested this on the receiving end, and it was disorienting enough that my return fire became sloppy. That's exactly what the developers intended: getting hit by a shotgun should feel like a shotgun.

Then came the SMG tests. Fast-firing weapons like the UMP and Vector still delivered noticeable Aim Punch, but each individual bullet felt less punishing than an SR or shotgun hit. The logic makes sense. SMGs rely on landing multiple quick hits, so the shake is cumulative rather than instant. Still, under sustained fire, the camera movement built into a genuine problem for my aim.

The middle weapon classes were the most interesting. The Dev Letter broke down Aim Punch intensity into ranks for DMRs, ARs, and LMGs.

These ranks sit below the SR, Shotgun, and SMG levels. The idea is to create a noticeable gap between the hard-hitting picks and the mainstream options. However, the difference among Ranks 4 through 7 is minimal. LMGs are aligned with their respective ARs because they share similar utility. Since these weapons already dominate the meta, giving them stronger Aim Punch would add unintended advantages. I appreciated that restraint. My M416 fights still felt competitive, just with a slightly more tactile feedback when hit.

Rank 8 serves as the new default intensity for everything else, and it's the weakest level. Pistols and other secondary weapons land at the bottom. During a chaotic hot drop, I barely noticed the Aim Punch from a pistol, which felt appropriate. A sidearm shouldn't rattle you the way a .300 Magnum does.

One of the cleanest changes I felt was the split between ADS and non-ADS states. Aim Punch now hits harder when you're aiming down sights. This makes suppressing fire more valuable because forcing an enemy out of ADS directly reduces their accuracy. Camera Shake is also more pronounced against unarmored targets. I noticed this during early fights before finding vests—getting shot while unprotected made my screen jump noticeably more, which added a realistic sense of vulnerability.

The developers also smoothed out the movement curve. Instead of the old jerky jumps, the new Aim Punch flows more naturally. The camera rises and settles in a way that feels less like a glitch and more like an impact. There's still a need for manual correction because the aiming point doesn't reset on its own, but the motion itself feels less jarring.

To be clear, this Gunplay Labs test is not the final implementation. The Dev Letter emphasizes that all weapons within the same category currently share the same Aim Punch intensity. In the future, the team plans to introduce varying levels within a single weapon class to further refine gunplay. That's a big deal for balancing. A Beryl and an AKM might eventually feel different beyond recoil and damage.

After a full session, I completed the feedback survey. The developers want to know if these intensity levels actually work in practice. They're collecting data on every weapon type at once, which makes sense because adjusting Aim Punch in isolation could break overall balance. Public testing lets them see how all categories interact simultaneously.

The core philosophy is clear: add another layer of variability alongside recoil, fire rate, and damage. A stronger Aim Punch creates more dynamic gunplay and gives each weapon class a unique identity. Getting hit by an SR should feel different from eating SMG rounds, and that distinction should matter tactically.
